Medical Project:

Women’s Health Prevention Campaign

Problem: Because of lack of education, medical disinformation and poor personal hygiene habits, most of the women (ages 16-45) in the Northeast region of Brazil suffer gynecological problems that lead to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, infertility, bleeding, womb and uterus cancer and eventually death.

Solution: The Volunteer Brazil Health Prevention Campaign will treat 1,000 women, during a 05 days period (Monday to Friday), by searching, cataloging and providing clinical consultation with the assistance of a local ob-gyn doctor, nurses and social workers.

During the clinical work, the volunteer group will coordinate the patient selection process, fill out paperwork, disperse medicines and assist with all logistics. If the volunteer group has a medical professional team member, he/she will work alongside the local doctor, however one is not necessary for the completion and success of the health prevention campaign.

In case we discover patients who have medical complications, she/they will be immediately forwarded to the local hospital for proper medical care. Medicine will have to be purchased locally and given to the patients, thus making the project really essential and productive since the patients have no money to purchase medicines.

This campaign will have complete support of the local medical authorities, with the cooperation and follow-up of local basic health providers (family health workers). Clinical work will be provided at a pre-arranged community clinic.

The volunteer group will be officially invite to come to Brazil by the Ministry of Health of the City of Parnaiba, PI and will receive, upon the completion of the campaign, a Certificate of Participation from the City of Parnaíba and Volunteer Brazil. This health prevention campaign will have media follow-up and will be advertised in the entire city.

Besides treating 500 patients and giving them a new opportunity in life, there will be a fund of US$100/per volunteer to provide for the purchase and distribution of gynecological creams and medicines for the patients.

Volunteer Brazil will provide to the volunteer team leader the complete list of patients treated by the health prevention campaign project.

Project Costs: The costs involved to implement the health prevention campaign in Parnaiba, PI will be US$500 for each team member. These costs include providing for the location of the clinical work, to hire the ob-gyn doctor, nurses and social workers, to hire the patient screeners prior to the arrival of the volunteer group (including transportation and food stipend), the follow-up of the cases and logistical support to all local volunteers.
